It locks or unlocks the door by sending a coded signal via electromagnetic field or radio waves to a receiver unit in the car.
Most modern cars use fob with a frequency of 315MHz and 433.92MHz. The more sophisticated fob systems use encryption to prevent thieves from intercepting and spoofing the signal.
